Book Review: When My Brain Is Messy

Adorable illustrations, bright, and easy to understand.

This 32 page rhyming picture book shares the point of view of a little dinosaur whose surroundings can get to be a bit too much. We get to see how the dinosaur is affected by different sensory stimulation and what they can do to cope.

When My Brain Is Messy easily opens up discussions around ways to calm when feeling overstimulated. I love the phrasing of a “messy” brain, it’s so simple and helpful when talking about big feelings with little people.

Tania has done a wonderful job of putting the experience of overstimulation into words whilst also suggesting age appropriate tools to help ease that feeling. We got this book on a week in which my son could really relate to that little dinosaur. It’s become an instant favourite in our household.

When My Brain is Messy is a beautiful book sharing a point of view not seen enough. I’m glad my son has more and more loveable characters to relate to and learn from, this little dinosaur with a messy brain among them.
